General Assembly’s 23rd special session, ‘Women 2000’, follows up on 1995 Beijing Conference, Looks Towards FutureUN 203867C - United Nation, New York - 9 June 2000

Mariapia Garavaglia, Vice-President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, speaking as an observer, addresses the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly. Meeting on the theme, “Women 2000”: Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the Twenty-first Century”, the session brings together some 10,000 delegates from governments and non governmental organizations to review progress made on gender issues since the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women. It is Therefore also known as “Beijing +5”, after the site of the 1995 Conference.
